According to information from Güterkraftverkehr Logistik und Entsorgung (BGL), the Federal Ministry of Transport is planning to increase the HGV toll by 50 to 100 per cent as of 1 January 2009, depending on the pollutant category. This was reported by the Deutsche Verkehrszeitung. The increase will be based on the road cost report commissioned by the federal government and updated in December. The BGL argues that the cost calculations made there are "excessive in their foundations" and casts doubt on the assumptions on which the calculation is based: "The BGL is not against genuine cost-related toll increases, but sees no reason to increase the general toll rates due to the strong increase in traffic and the high fixed costs that are included in the infrastructure costs.
