Economic recovery: rising throughput at German seaports

German seaborne cargo throughput in 2010 will increase by 9 1TP3 tonnes to 284 million tonnes, making up 40 1TP3 tonnes of the slump in throughput in 2009 caused by the crisis. Growth of 4 1TP3 tonnes is forecast for 2011 and the record level of 2008 will be reached by 2013.

The port of Hamburg, in particular, was able to score points thanks to the increase in throughput and has thus returned to the level of growth dynamics of the western ports. The locational advantage of the port of Hamburg with its geographical location, fast hinterland connections and its efficiency is once again playing an increasingly important role in relation to the very cost-oriented behaviour of the shipping companies calling at the port in the past.
