Trucks still account for 44% of freight transport within the EU

The aim of the responsible EU Commission is to develop a transport system that balances the use of transport modes: rail transport must be revitalised, maritime and inland waterway transport promoted and air transport made manageable. It is the task of the EU to ensure efficient freight transport as the basis for further economic growth in the EU, taking into account the economic and social components. This will continue to require high levels of investment in transport networks. As long as large-scale shippers use logistics platforms to optimise processes, require vehicles to be available at loading and unloading points at precise times and need to react quickly and promptly, there is currently no alternative to the truck. EU policy cannot escape this reality. Future developments remain to be seen.
