From July 2008, the Low Emission Zone will also apply to all HGVs over 3.5 tonnes as well as buses and coaches that have to meet the Euro III emissions standard. The Low Emission Zone (LEZ) in London came into force on 4 February 2008. Both drivers of vehicles registered in the UK and drivers of vehicles registered outside the UK must fulfil the emission standards required by the Low Emission Zone regulations. Initially, the LEZ only affected diesel-powered HGVs over 12 tonnes (Euro III). The aim of the Low Emission Zone is to improve air quality in London by discouraging the use of the most polluting vehicles in the area.
